Honest limits: This tool works best on photos with a fairly uniform background (a plain wall, a clear sky, a studio backdrop). It uses the background color sampled from the image corners and removes connected areas of similar color. It is not a Photoshop replacement: it cannot cleanly cut out hair, fur, glass, or busy, multi-color backgrounds. Results on those images will look rough — that is a limit of running everything free in your browser, not a bug.

How to remove a background

  1. Click "Choose an image" and pick a photo from your phone or computer.
  2. Leave the tolerance at 45 for a first try, then click "Remove Background".
  3. If background is left behind, raise the tolerance a little and run it again. If parts of your subject disappear, lower the tolerance.
  4. Choose a preview background (transparent, white, or black), then click "Download PNG" to save the result.

How it works

The tool samples the average color of the four corners of your photo — in most photos, the corners are background. It then walks inward from the edges, pixel by pixel, and makes transparent every pixel whose color is close to that background color (within your tolerance setting). Because it only follows connected areas, an enclosed patch of background-colored pixels inside your subject is left alone, which protects the subject from holes.

Worked example

Example: A product photo of a red mug on a white wall. The corners average to RGB (248, 248, 246) — nearly white. With tolerance 45, every edge-connected pixel within a color distance of 45 from that white is removed. The white wall disappears, the red mug (RGB around 180, 40, 40, a distance of over 300 from white) stays fully opaque, and the downloaded PNG has a transparent background ready to paste onto any design.

Tips for the best result

Use photos with a plain, evenly lit background and a subject that contrasts with it. Dark subjects on light backgrounds (or the reverse) work best. Avoid shadows cast on the background — a shadow is darker than the sampled background color, so it survives as a gray fringe. Cropping the photo tightly around the subject before uploading also helps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read by your browser and processed on your own device with the Canvas API. It is never sent to our servers or to any third party.

Why does it work better on some photos than others?

The tool removes colors similar to the corners of the image. On a plain background that works cleanly. On a busy background with many colors, or where the subject shares the background color, there is no single color to remove, so the result is rough.

Can it remove the background from a photo of a person with messy hair?

Not cleanly. Fine hair strands mix background and hair colors in the same pixels, so a color-based tool cannot separate them precisely. For portraits with hair, a dedicated editor with an AI segmentation model will do a much better job.

What format is the download?

A PNG file with a real transparent background, so you can place it over any color, photo, or design without a white box around it.

Is there a size limit?

Images are processed at up to 1000 pixels on the longest side to keep your browser fast. Very large photos are scaled down first, so the download matches that processed size.
